After an eight-month break due to a back injury, Filipino-Ivorian fencer Maxine Esteban made a triumphant return by winning silver in the women’s foil at the 23rd African Fencing Championships in Lagos, Nigeria.
Esteban showcased her resilience and skill by defeating top contenders from Algeria and Egypt before falling to fellow Paris Olympian Sara Hossny in the final.
“This medal means everything — it’s proof that patience and recovery pay off,” she said.
Esteban now sets her sights on the 2025 World Championship in Tbilisi, Georgia, before heading back to the Philippines for a fencing outreach program for youth.
Her homecoming in August will include a fencing camp for young Filipino athletes, backed by Rebisco Extreme.
