Sen. Mark Villar will remain with the Senate minority bloc despite voting to change the denominator used for the conviction threshold in Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial, Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano said.
Cayetano clarified that political alignments within the Senate do not dictate how senator-judges vote in the impeachment court.
Villar had broken ranks with his minority colleagues, who chose not to participate in the vote on the threshold.
Cayetano said the minority bloc remains unified and that consultations among members focus on understanding each other’s views rather than deciding how to vote as a group.
He also acknowledged the absence of several minority members due to legal and medical issues, saying the bloc hopes to have all 11 members present eventually.
