President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed openness to calling a special session of Congress for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, should the Senate request it.
This follows the House of Representatives’ recent endorsement of the impeachment complaint against Duterte, which was not addressed by the Senate due to its adjournment.
Marcos stated that the decision to convene would be up to the Senate, while former Senate President Franklin Drilon suggested that a special session could be called to address the impeachment trial.
Senate President Francis Escudero confirmed that the impeachment trial will likely occur under the 20th Congress after the May elections, as the current Congress is in recess.
The impeachment complaint includes serious charges against Duterte, and lawmakers involved in the case expressed their commitment to pursuing it despite potential backlash.
