President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has vetoed the bill granting Philippine citizenship to Chinese entrepreneur Li Duan Wang, citing national security concerns.
In his veto message, Marcos emphasized that national security agencies had raised alarming warnings about Wang’s character and influence, warning of potential dangers to the country.
The president stressed that citizenship is a privilege that should not be granted lightly, especially when it might compromise national interests.
Wang’s application had drawn criticism due to his alleged links to the Philippine offshore gaming industry and past questionable activities.
Despite the Senate’s approval of the bill, Marcos remained unconvinced that Wang deserved Filipino citizenship, prioritizing the country’s security and values.
