Mandaue City officials are reviewing the enforcement of their decade-old ban on single-use plastics under City Ordinance 12-2010-562, aimed at reducing waste and preventing clogged drainage systems.
While businesses like stores, eateries, and malls are required to use paper, cloth, or reusable alternatives, plastic use remains prevalent, particularly in public markets.
Councilor Carlo Fortuna said the review will identify compliance gaps and strengthen enforcement without harming livelihoods, while also promoting the “reduce, reuse, recycle” principle among residents.
The city is encouraging the use of reusable water bottles in government offices and events to cut disposable plastic consumption, especially after the closure of the Binaliw landfill, which affected waste disposal.
Officials stressed that effective waste management requires cooperation from both the government and the community.
