Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Malaysia will continue oil and gas exploration in the South China Sea, despite opposition from China revealed in a leaked diplomatic note.
Anwar emphasized that Malaysia’s activities are within its exclusive economic zone and stressed that China remains a “great friend,” advocating for amicable discussions on the issue.
Malaysia’s state oil firm Petronas operates the fields in question, while China claims almost all of the South China Sea, despite an international court ruling against its claims.
The leaked note showed China demanding Malaysia halt operations off Sarawak, accusing it of encroaching on Chinese territory.
Anwar stated that Malaysia must secure its economic interests and is open to dialogue but will not stop its exploration efforts.
