Malacañang expressed concern over the presence of a large Chinese Coast Guard vessel, CCG-5901, near the Panatag Shoal in Zambales, asserting that the Philippines is actively challenging the ship’s intrusion into its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The 12,000-ton vessel, larger than a U.S. Navy destroyer, has been described as a “monster ship” equipped with anti-aircraft guns and fuel storage capacities.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has been closely monitoring the vessel’s erratic movements, which suggest it is not conducting innocent passage but asserting China’s jurisdiction over the area.
Despite China’s counteractions, no confrontation has occurred, and the Philippines continues to file protests and engage in peaceful discussions with China.
The PCG remains committed to asserting Philippine sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea, deploying assets to track and challenge the vessel’s presence.
