M4GG QUESTIONS SHORTCHANGED LOCAL TAX SHARES, SEEKS FINANCE DEPARTMENT MEETING

Mayors for Good Governance (M4GG) has raised concerns with the Department of Finance, claiming that local governments are receiving only 31 percent of their entitled share from national taxes, instead of the full 40 percent mandated by the Mandanas-Garcia ruling.

Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong, a founder of M4GG, highlighted that local governments are being shortchanged and called for a meeting with Finance Secretary Ralph Recto to clarify how shares are computed.

The Mandanas-Garcia ruling, affirmed by the Supreme Court in 2018, expanded local government shares to include all national taxes, not just internal revenue.

Magalong expressed concerns over the continuing impact of corruption on national expenditures, pointing to the rising national debt.

M4GG, composed of about 100 mayors, is committed to addressing these fiscal issues and advocating for good governance.
