President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered lifestyle checks on government officials amid an investigation into corruption linked to flood control projects, with initial focus on the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Palace spokesperson Claire Castro said the checks will assess whether officials’ lifestyles, including luxury cars, align with their declared income, and agencies like the Bureau of Customs, Bureau of Internal Revenue, and Commission on Audit will scrutinize related transactions.
Local government units are also urged to verify if contractors have secured the necessary permits for their projects.
Marcos has inspected several flood control projects that were found to be non-existent, destroyed, or substandard despite large expenditures, and the DPWH has already relieved officials implicated in ghost projects and bribery attempts.
With over 9,000 reports received through the president’s “Sumbong sa Pangulo” platform, Congress is conducting parallel investigations to address the corruption in DPWH infrastructure projects.
