Sen. Loren Legarda has filed Proposed Senate Resolution No. 504 to honor Filipina tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala for her historic run to the fourth round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, the best performance by a Filipino in the Open Era.
The resolution highlights Eala’s victories over Renata Zarazúa, Maya Joint and reigning champion Iga Świątek before her Round of 16 loss to Jasmine Paolini, which earned her a standing ovation from tennis greats Billie Jean King and Roger Federer.
Legarda praised Eala’s discipline, humility and determination, saying she proved Filipinos can compete with and defeat the world’s best.
The measure also recognizes Eala’s string of milestones, including becoming the first Filipino to win a junior Grand Slam singles title, reach a WTA Tour final and climb to a career-high world ranking of No. 28.
Legarda said Eala’s Wimbledon breakthrough is one of the defining achievements in Philippine sports history and an inspiration to future generations of Filipino athletes.
