Senator Panfilo Lacson criticized fellow senator Ronald Dela Rosa for moving to dismiss the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, saying it was improper for a senator-judge to act like a presiding judge in a regular court.
Lacson insisted that the Constitution mandates the Senate to try and decide impeachment cases, urging colleagues to respect due process.
He also suggested seeking input from members of the 1987 Constitutional Commission to understand the framers’ intent on impeachment proceedings.
Senator Risa Hontiveros echoed Lacson’s call for impartiality, emphasizing that newly elected senators can take their oath as senator-judges as early as June 30.
She urged the impeachment court to resume without delay and affirmed the public’s right to transparent and fair proceedings.
