The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) signed an agreement with Japanese firms Sumitomo Corporation and Hankyu Corporation for the operations and maintenance of the LRT-1 system.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista and Japan International Cooperation Agency officials witnessed the contract signing.

Hankyu Corporation will provide technical assistance to assess and enhance LRT-1’s operations and personnel training.

Bautista noted the agreement’s timeliness, with partial operations for the LRT-1 Cavite extension set to begin in late 2024.

Hankyu Corp. Senior Managing Director Masayoshi Uemora emphasized the importance of railway systems in mitigating traffic congestion in the Philippines.
