Japan has expressed grave concern over escalating tensions in the South China Sea, vowing to strengthen its partnership with the Philippines in defense, security, and economic cooperation.
During a bilateral meeting with Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya reaffirmed Japan’s opposition to unilateral actions altering the status quo and emphasized adherence to international law.
Iwaya assured Japan’s continued support in maritime security, citing joint projects like the Subic base initiative and maritime vessel transfers.
Both officials highlighted the importance of the 1982 UNCLOS and trilateral cooperation with the U.S. for regional stability.
President Marcos welcomed Japan’s commitment, noting its alignment with Philippine values in addressing complex global challenges.
