The House of Representatives has approved House Bill 10926, granting Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) a new 25-year legislative franchise.
The bill passed with 186 votes in favor, seven against, and four abstentions. Meralco’s current franchise is set to expire in 2028.
The bill, which consolidates three separate proposals, was introduced by lawmakers including Reps. Joey Salceda, Rufus Rodriguez, and Lord Allan Velasco.
Salceda praised Meralco’s contributions to economic growth and service reliability, citing substantial investments that have improved the power distribution system.
