Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii condemned a recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on the home of Filipino teachers in Kahului, Maui, calling it racial profiling and a “shameful abuse of power.”
ICE agents conducted the raid on May 6 as part of an immigration investigation, briefly detaining and questioning the teachers, who were later released without any arrests.
The educators are legally employed under the J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program through the Hawaii Department of Education.
Schatz said such actions instill fear rather than uphold the law, and his office is working with state officials to support the affected teachers.
The Hawaii State Teachers Association also criticized the raid, describing it as unnecessarily distressing and lacking accountability.
