GOVERNMENT APPROVES ONION IMPORTS TO CURB PRICE SURGE

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has approved the importation of 4,000 metric tons of onions to prevent potential price spikes.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the move aims to ensure sufficient buffer stocks while waiting for the fresh harvest.

The decision follows the 2022 onion crisis, where prices soared to P700 per kilo due to supply shortages and import delays.

Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) data shows the country consumes 17,000 MT of red and 4,000 MT of white onions monthly, with current stocks expected to last until February.

The imported onions, a precaution against supply gaps caused by typhoons and pests, are set to arrive within two weeks.
