The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) projects that the Philippines’ fisheries production will increase by 12 percent to almost 2.9 million metric tons (MT) by 2032, driven by higher aquaculture output.
The FAO estimates Philippine fish output will rise from 2.572 million MT in 2022 to 2.881 million MT in 2032, with aquaculture’s share increasing from 31 percent to 34 percent of total fisheries production.
In 2022, the country’s aquaculture production was 804,000 MT, and it is expected to grow to 965,000 MT by 2032. The FAO also noted that the Philippines will remain the fifth largest fish producer in Asia, with aquaculture seen as a key sector for economic contribution and welfare improvement.
Additionally, the Philippines was the fourth largest algae producer globally in 2022, with an output of 1.5 million MT, primarily seaweed.
