Low and mid-rise buildings in Metro Manila need urgent earthquake safety assessments, according to Science Secretary Renato Solidum.
He emphasized that these buildings, many of which are considered “non-engineered,” should be evaluated for earthquake resistance and retrofitted if cost-effective.
Solidum explained that smaller buildings, especially those close to fault lines, would be more vulnerable to earthquakes than high-rise structures, although the latter are not immune to damage.
A 2008 study using the US Hazus program estimated that over 1.2 million buildings in Metro Manila could be damaged in a 6.7-magnitude earthquake, with significant damage to low and mid-rise buildings.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) urged the private sector to collaborate with engineers to ensure buildings are resilient, while local government units were advised to rigorously inspect structures and issue appropriate permits.
