Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero urged the Senate Committee on Energy to tackle Senate Bill No. 498, which seeks to provide better protection and benefits for power sector workers.
He emphasized that while consumers face rising electricity rates, frontline workers like linemen operate under risks and often lack adequate safeguards.
The bill aims to institutionalize worker benefits and protections, including for those responding to typhoons, earthquakes, and brownouts.
Escudero noted that a secure and motivated workforce helps stabilize service delivery and supports the country’s energy transition to renewables.
He stressed that protecting workers ultimately protects consumers, ensuring a reliable and resilient power system.
