Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has been declared fit to stand trial for crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC), clearing the way for proceedings scheduled to begin on Nov. 30.
ICC Trial Chamber III based its ruling on reports from a three-member medical panel that found no new evidence to change its previous assessment of Duterte’s fitness.
The judges also rejected the defense’s request for an additional medical examination and an oral hearing on his condition.
Experts said Duterte can understand the charges and evidence, follow the proceedings, and instruct his lawyers in preparing his defense.
However, the panel recommended measures to accommodate his age and health, including hearing assistance, regular breaks, nursing support, and hearings starting no earlier than 11 a.m.
