The Department of Agriculture (DA) is investing around ₱300 million this year to expand climate-resilient production of vegetables like tomatoes, chili, and bell peppers to stabilize supply and curb price spikes caused by extreme weather.
The program will support simple greenhouses, rain shelters, drip irrigation, and water-impounding systems to help farmers maintain year-round production even during El Niño or La Niña events.
The DA is working with cooperatives and community groups to organize local seed and seedling production, involving women and youth, while Food Terminal Inc. has committed to buying crops at pre-agreed prices to ensure income security.
Pilot projects will focus on areas near major consumption centers such as Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao, to expand greenhouse coverage from 500 hectares to 5,000 hectares by 2027.
The agency is also building cold storage and small-scale processing facilities to reduce post-harvest losses, extend shelf life, and create additional revenue streams for farmers.
