The Department of Agriculture (DA) has approved the importation of live hogs, pork, and by-products from African swine fever (ASF)-free zones in Canada, effective immediately under Memorandum Order 77 signed by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr.
The approval followed the Bureau of Animal Industry’s review of Canada’s application for bilateral recognition of ASF regionalization, a strategy that permits safe trade from disease-free areas while avoiding total import bans.
ASF-free zones are strictly monitored geographic areas certified free of the disease through surveillance and biosecurity measures, in line with World Organization for Animal Health standards.
The Philippines and Canada agreed on the terms and conditions for recognizing ASF regionalization, ensuring safe and regulated swine trade.
Meanwhile, the DA has temporarily banned pork imports from Spain and Taiwan after recent ASF outbreaks in those countries.
