Senator Camille Villar has filed Senate Bill No. 1401, the “BPO Workers’ Welfare and Protection Act,” aimed at strengthening safeguards for business process outsourcing (BPO) employees.
The bill was prompted by reports that Cebu-based BPO workers were forced to return to work despite a recent magnitude 6.9 earthquake, raising concerns about their safety and well-being.
Villar’s proposed law directs the Department of Labor and Employment to enforce strict Occupational Health and Safety Standards tailored for the BPO sector, with regular inspections and annual reviews.
It also requires companies to develop their own workplace safety policies and prohibits excessive fees or discrimination against workers.
Villar emphasized that protecting BPO workers is essential to upholding the dignity of Filipino labor and ensuring shared prosperity.
