Lawmakers filed several bills on Monday seeking to ban or strictly regulate online gambling, citing its harmful effects on families, youth, and society.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed support for the Department of Finance’s proposal to impose new taxes on online gaming platforms, provided it is carefully studied to curb addiction and financial hardship.
Senators Juan Miguel Zubiri and JV Ejercito called online gambling a “social cancer” and a “silent epidemic,” warning of its widespread accessibility and mental health impacts, especially on minors.
The House also saw the filing of bills to ban e-sabong and regulate gambling platforms through age restrictions and tighter oversight.
The Palace vowed to support legislation and enforcement efforts aimed at minimizing addiction, protecting families, and shutting down illegal or unlicensed sites.
