Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources National Director Elizer Salilig called for continued support of sustainable fishing as the 15th sardine fishing season opened in Zamboanga Peninsula following a three-month ban.
Salilig emphasized that sustainable practices are crucial to protect food security and the livelihoods of local fishers, while ensuring long-term growth of the fishing industry under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s national policy.
The ban, covering the East Sulu Sea, Basilan Strait, and Sibuguey Bay, was lifted on Feb. 16, allowing commercial fleets to resume operations until November.
Salilig also highlighted the need for stakeholder cooperation and law enforcement, securing support from local officials, the Philippine Coast Guard, and other government and educational institutions.
The opening was marked by a ceremonial gong and the dispatch of fishing vessels to the waters, signaling the start of the season.
