The local government of Mariveles has issued an executive order to curb the spread of contraband cigarettes, citing the municipality’s vulnerability as a major port and gateway for trade.
Mayor Ace Jello Concepcion created the Mariveles Anti-Contraband Task Force (MACTF) to coordinate inspections, monitor ports, and work with national agencies like the PNP, BOC, BIR, and Coast Guard.
The EO also requires retailers to keep supplier records, sell only tax-stamped products, and display notices confirming compliance.
Concepcion highlighted that illicit cigarette trade undermines legitimate businesses, deprives the government of taxes, poses health risks, and fuels organized crime.
The move aligns with a national crackdown on illegal tobacco, which has already led to seizures worth hundreds of millions of pesos and the closure of illegal factories.
