The Commission on Elections (Comelec) anticipates the arrival of an initial batch of 20,000 vote counting machines (VCMs) from South Korea’s Miru Systems in August, in preparation for the May 2025 midterm elections.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia stated that preparations for the elections are underway at full speed, with Miru currently customizing the machines.
The total order comprises 110,000 automated machines, including peripherals, under a P17.99-billion contract. Garcia acknowledged that despite the new machines, glitches may still occur, but expressed confidence in Miru’s credibility.
The decision to opt for new machines stemmed from malfunctions in Smartmatic units during the 2022 polls.
Garcia emphasized the importance of ensuring the reliability of the election process for the country’s democracy.
