Education Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara stated that a proposed PHP 50,000 increase in entry-level salaries for public school teachers could be feasible if the government’s fiscal condition improves.
For now, teachers’ salaries are adjusted under the Salary Standardization Law (SSL), which provides incremental increases, with a projected annual rise of PHP 33,000 for entry-level positions.
Angara, who previously advocated for wage hikes as Senate Committee on Finance chair, noted that while the proposed increase would significantly boost salaries, it is currently dependent on budgetary constraints.
The proposal, introduced by Makabayan bloc lawmakers, aims to align teachers’ salaries with the cost of living and address salary discrepancies with military and uniformed personnel.
Angara supports the proposal and is committed to improving teachers’ working conditions by reducing non-teaching responsibilities.
