AGRI REFORMS IN FOCUS AS SENATE BETS PRESENT PLATFORMS

Four senatorial candidates emphasized the need for agricultural policy reforms to address the country’s food security issues.

Norberto Gonzales called for a revision of importation policies to promote self-sufficiency, especially in crops like rice, which are increasingly imported.

Danilo Ramos criticized the Rice Tariffication Law for exacerbating agricultural losses and advocated for repealing it, as well as implementing genuine land reforms and subsidies for farmers.

Roberto Ballon, a fisherman and environmental advocate, highlighted the importance of supporting local production and preventing illegal encroachment in municipal waters by commercial fishers.

Raul Lambino argued for decentralizing agricultural governance, giving local government units more power to manage food security, and reducing reliance on imports.
