Two Filipino seafarers were killed after the Saudi-operated oil tanker Sidr was involved in a security incident while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Aug. 31, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said.
The agency is assisting the victims’ families and facilitating the repatriation of their remains, including their benefits, compensation, and insurance claims.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has also ordered government agencies to provide immediate assistance to the families of the two seafarers from Laguna and Cebu.
The DMW reminded Filipino seafarers that they have the right to refuse voyages through high-risk maritime areas and urged shipowners to strengthen safety measures.
The agency will investigate whether required safeguards, including risk assessments and security measures, were followed during the tanker’s voyage.
