Vice President Sara Duterte will skip President Marcos’ fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 28, though a reserved seat will be held in case she decides to attend.
Duterte also missed last year’s SONA, when she controversially called herself a “designated survivor.”
The once-strong alliance between Marcos and Duterte began to deteriorate in 2023, especially after the arrest of Duterte’s father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, on charges related to alleged crimes against humanity.
Meanwhile, progressive group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) is calling for mass protests during the SONA to mark Marcos’ third year in office and criticize his government’s handling of human rights.
Bayan also condemned Marcos for retaining repressive laws and agencies despite calls from the UN and civil society for reforms.
