Registered voters from the ten “embo” barangays in Taguig are allowed to vote and run for Congress in the upcoming elections, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Chairman George Garcia stated that barring any court restrictions, voters from these areas can elect their congressmen.
The House of Representatives has passed a resolution to include the embo barangays in Taguig’s two legislative districts, although a similar resolution in the Senate recently led to a heated debate.
Garcia confirmed that congressional candidates from the embo barangays can file their certificates of candidacy from October 1 to 8, but cautioned that a temporary restraining order could prevent the 300,000 registered voters from participating in the elections.
Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano expressed gratitude to lawmakers for protecting the voting rights of Embo residents, while the Comelec noted that the resolution does not address whether they can vote for a House representative.
