Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto called for the urgent passage of an anti-political dynasty law, citing the need to prevent the concentration of power and misuse of public resources.
Speaking at a consultative meeting led by Sen. Risa Hontiveros, Sotto emphasized that political families often dominate elections not due to competence but because of name recognition and access to government machinery.
He warned that independent candidates face systemic disadvantages and, in some cases, threats to their personal safety when challenging entrenched political elites.
The consultation, attended by students and civil society groups, is part of a broader push to enforce the long-delayed constitutional mandate against dynasties.
Sotto urged citizens to pressure Congress to act, highlighting the importance of public participation in ensuring equal opportunities for political service.
