VALENZUELA TO BUILD FIRST WATER CATCHMENT BASIN TO CURB FLOODING

Valenzuela City Mayor Weslie Gatchalian unveiled plans to build the city’s first two-kilometer water catchment basin in Barangay Dalandanan to ease chronic flooding along McArthur Highway.

Approved by the city’s newly formed flood advisory committee, the basin aims to store excess rainwater and reopen major roads quickly after storms.

The city will also construct nine new pumping stations to supplement its 30 existing but underperforming units.

Gatchalian said these efforts respond to last month’s severe flooding, which submerged 80% of the city’s villages due to heavy rains from monsoon weather and tropical cyclones.

Valenzuela will also work with the UP Resilience Institute and NLEX Corp. to update its outdated drainage master plan and implement long-term flood control solutions.
