The head of the Philippines’ largest business group has emphasized the importance of upskilling agricultural workers, alongside the efforts to enhance the skills of IT workers.
While industries like business process outsourcing and electronics are crucial, priority should be given to the agriculture sector and its workers, according to the President of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
A knowledge-sharing forum was organized by the Philippine Business for Education, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
During the event, industry leaders and experts from different countries shared their best practices for developing workforce skills in the digital age.
The British Embassy in Manila highlighted that technological advancements pose a risk to the country’s business process outsourcing sector.
Representatives from the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology emphasized the need for greater collaboration between the public and private sectors in upskilling initiatives.
The President of the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation expressed readiness to collaborate with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority in creating courses that equip Filipinos with the necessary skills for the electronics industry.
Currently, many college graduates lack sufficient training in advanced manufacturing.
The Director General of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority pledged to improve their industry board mechanism to ensure that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs meet the standards of employers, industry practitioners, and academia.
These partnerships and collaborations are expected to enhance the subjects taught in schools and improve workforce skills in various industries.
