Sen. Erwin Tulfo has urged the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee to investigate an alleged extortion scheme involving Bureau of Internal Revenue examiners, who reportedly abused letters of authority (LOAs) to pressure businesses, including MSMEs.
Tulfo likened the LOA to a “search warrant” that allows examiners to review company records and said former BIR chief Romeo Lumagui Jr. should be invited to testify.
He also called for a reshuffle of BIR officials amid reports of irregularities by regional directors. Tulfo cited multiple complaints of companies being shortchanged on their tax receipts, with examiners allegedly pocketing the difference.
Similar complaints were reportedly received by Senators JV Ejercito and Loren Legarda, highlighting systemic concerns within the agency.
