TRANSPORT GROUP TO HOLD THREE-DAY STRIKE STARTING NOVEMBER 20

The transport group PISTON announced on Wednesday that it will lead a three-day transport strike starting on Monday, November 20.

This strike is in response to the approaching December 31 deadline for franchise consolidation applications under the PUV or public utility vehicle modernization project.

PISTON, which is also known as Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide, said that the strike is necessary to protect the interests of jeepney drivers and operators.

The group is opposing to the PUV modernization program, which they say will lead to the phaseout of hundreds of thousands of traditional jeepneys nationwide.

Another transport group, Manibela, held a strike in October against the PUV modernization program. The strike caused “minimal” disruption to traffic, according to authorities.

Jeepney drivers and operators oppose the project, saying that the new jeepneys are too expensive and will deprive them of their livelihoods.

Meanwhile, some also argued that upgrading existing jeepneys would be a more affordable way to make them more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly.
