According to the think tank Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED), the Philippines does not need to expand mining activities to meet energy transition needs.
During a webinar, CEED argued that the country’s existing copper and nickel supply is sufficient to support renewable energy goals.
Mining engineer Joshua Lopez emphasized that increased mining is unnecessary, citing the nation’s current production capacity.
CEED raised concerns about the export of raw minerals, highlighting the lack of domestic processing, which limits local economic benefits.
Additionally, mining activities have had detrimental effects on water sources and food security in affected areas.
