On Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stated that the Philippines is now better equipped to handle a major earthquake, often referred to as the “big one,” due to the government’s regular earthquake drills and other awareness-raising efforts.
This assurance comes in response to the tragic magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck Morocco on September 8, resulting in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives.
Phivolcs emphasized that the consistent earthquake drills conducted by national and local governments play a significant role in increasing awareness among Filipinos.
The agency also highlighted his agency’s ongoing collaboration with relevant government bodies and local government units (LGUs) to implement strategies aimed at reducing the impact of earthquakes in their respective regions.
Furthermore, he advised the public to maintain preparedness by having an emergency kit stocked with essentials like medicine and enough food to last at least three days.
Bacolcol also cited examples of proactive LGUs such as Quezon City, Makati City, Pasig City, and Muntinlupa City, which have been encouraging residents living near the West Valley Fault (WVF) to consider relocating to safer areas.
Specifically, the agency highlighted Quezon City LGU’s proactive efforts in reminding and assisting affected homeowners and residents in moving away from the fault line.
