TEACHERS’ GROUP URGES COMELEC TO PROVIDE OVERTIME PAY FOR POLL DUTY

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) has called on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to grant overtime pay to teachers who worked more than 24 hours as poll workers during the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

In a letter addressed to Comelec Chair George Garcia, TDC Chair Benjo Basas pointed out that the honorarium given to teachers serving as members of the electoral board (EB) was considered a per diem, or daily allowance, calculated based on three days, equivalent to three eight-hour shifts or 24 hours of continuous work.

Basas stated in the letter dated Oct. 31 “Still, many of our Department of Education (DepEd) employees work beyond 24 hours and are thus entitled to overtime pay.”
