The House of Representatives has deferred approval of several tax-related bills, including proposals to extend estate tax amnesty and impose excise taxes on single-use plastic bags, pending guidance from the new Department of Finance (DOF) leadership.
During Thursday’s Ways and Means Committee hearing, DOF officials said they are still aligning with Finance Secretary Frederick Go’s policy direction and have not submitted an official position on the measures.
Go recently assumed the post following the appointment of former Finance Secretary Ralph Recto as executive secretary.
Committee Chair Miro Quimbo assured lawmakers that the DOF is transitioning quickly and will provide input once ready.
The delay affects bills like the estate tax amnesty extension, which lapsed into law in August 2023 after prior delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
