SUPREME COURT URGED TO OVERTURN POSTPONEMENT OF 2025 BARANGAY, SK POLLS

The Supreme Court has been petitioned to declare Republic Act 12232 unconstitutional for postponing the December 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to November 2026.

Election lawyer Romulo Macalintal argued that the law violates constitutional rules by not mentioning the postponement in its title and extending the terms of current officials without a valid basis.

He also criticized the scheduling of the elections on All Souls’ Day and questioned the government’s claim that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) could not handle back-to-back elections.

Macalintal requested the court to issue a temporary restraining order to stop the postponement and allow preparations for the 2025 elections to continue.

Comelec Chair George Garcia said preparations for the December 2025 polls will proceed unless the Supreme Court upholds the law.
