A proposal to postpone the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (BSKE) elections is gaining support in the House of Representatives, with some lawmakers citing the impact of rising fuel prices and the economic crisis.
Deputy Speaker Albee Benitez is pushing for a six-month delay, saying the ₱16 billion election budget could instead be used for fuel-related concerns.
Malacañang said President Marcos is open to reviewing the proposal and will assess whether it would benefit the country.
However, critics have raised legal concerns, noting that the Supreme Court has previously ruled that repeated postponements of the BSKE are unconstitutional.
The debate comes amid past controversies over election delays and extensions of terms for barangay officials.
