President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed Republic Act No. 12326, postponing the 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to November 2028 and extending the terms of incumbent officials to five years.
The law, which took effect upon publication, also provides that succeeding BSKEs will be held every five years.
Under the measure, incumbent barangay officials serving their final term will be considered to have completed one term and will be ineligible to seek the same post in 2028.
The Commission on Elections suspended preparations for the November 2026 polls, including the scheduled filing of certificates of candidacy, following the law’s enactment.
The postponement has drawn criticism from election watchdogs and other groups over voters’ right to choose local leaders, while Malacañang said the extension would allow incumbent officials to continue ongoing programs and services.
