The Senate approved the transfer of former Public Works district engineer Brice Hernandez from the PNP Custodial Center in Quezon City to Pasay City Jail, while keeping him under Senate custody.
Hernandez was initially detained in the Senate but requested not to return due to safety fears following his exposé linking senators to flood control project anomalies.
Senate President Vicente Sotto III explained the transfer was made after the House committee allowed Hernandez to stay under their custody, but the Senate insisted on maintaining control.
The decision sparked debate among senators about the Senate’s rules on witness custody and the need to assert its independence from the House of Representatives.
Some senators criticized the House for alleged threats against witnesses, emphasizing that the Senate has never experienced such issues and should uphold its own protocols.
