Vice President Sara Duterte attended the 39th-anniversary celebration of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KJC) on Sunday, despite police surveillance about their fugitive leader, Apollo Quiboloy.
Duterte, who had been advised against attending, used the opportunity to apologize to the KJC for encouraging their support of then-presidential candidate Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
She condemned the ongoing police standoff with Quiboloy’s followers, labeling it a “crisis” and criticizing it as an abuse of power and an assault on religious freedom.
Duterte also linked the situation to her own office’s struggle with the House of Representatives over the Office of the Vice President’s budget.
Quiboloy faces charges of sex trafficking and other offenses in both the Philippines and the United States.
