The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) of the Philippines has announced that random checks will be conducted on jeepneys to determine if they are part of a cooperative.
LTFRB Chair Teofilo Guadiz III stated that the agency will partner with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to carry out these checks. The primary focus will be on examining the jeepneys’ papers to ensure compliance with consolidation requirements.
The LTFRB also plans to issue stickers to identify whether a jeepney is part of a consolidated entity. The deadline for the consolidation of jeepney franchises passed on December 31, 2023. Failure to comply with consolidation requirements may result in penalties and sanctions.
The move to conduct random checks and enforce consolidation requirements aims to modernize the jeepney system in the country. However, transport groups have criticized the government’s modernization program, viewing it as anti-poor.
The LTFRB’s efforts to regulate and consolidate the jeepney sector reflect the government’s commitment to improving public transportation and ensuring compliance with modernization initiatives.
