Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has signed an ordinance institutionalizing the QC Textile and Circularity Program to strengthen the city’s circular economy and sustainability efforts.
Belmonte said the “Textile Sustainability and Circularity Ordinance” aims to prevent textile waste from ending up in landfills by promoting reuse, upcycling, and recycling.
The program includes the establishment of circularity hubs where scrap fabrics will be collected, sorted, repaired, and transformed into new products, generating livelihood opportunities for residents.
The initiative builds on the existing circularity hub in Barangay Payatas and will be supported by partnerships with government agencies, civil society, and the academe.
A textile sustainability committee, chaired by the mayor, will oversee the program and craft a five-year action plan, with incentives offered to businesses that support the circular textile economy.
