QC CONGRESSMAN VARGAS BACKS MEASURE FOR DISASTER WORKER WELFARE

Quezon City 5th district Rep. PM Vargas has reintroduced House Bill No. 2268, the “Magna Carta of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Workers Act,” to institutionalize support for frontline disaster workers.

The bill aims to formally recognize and protect the critical role of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) personnel, who face the greatest risks during emergencies.

It proposes job security, hazard pay, medical and mental health support, protective equipment, and fair working conditions for both regular and contractual workers.

Vargas emphasized that DRRM workers are often the first responders and last to leave disaster sites, yet remain undervalued and underprotected.

This legislation builds on the efforts of his predecessor and brother, former Rep. Alfred Vargas, who championed disaster preparedness laws like the “Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act.”
