Pope Leo XIV has approved the election of Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as dean of the College of Cardinals, making him the first Asian to hold the position.
He succeeds Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, 92, whose resignation was accepted by the pope.
Tagle, a former Manila archbishop, has served as a senior Vatican official since 2020.
As dean, he will coordinate the work of cardinal bishops and may preside over a papal conclave if eligible.
The position carries a five-year term, which may be renewed once, but does not grant authority over fellow cardinals.
